Citywide help for Breakfast with Baby
Remember when March was unofficially designated as Diaper Drive Month in the city of Des Plaines? Wonderful giving throughout Des Plaines to Baby Jacqueline Bogusz’s first-ever service project resulted in a total of 6,294 diapers for Breakfast with Baby at The Salvation Army. At the most recent City Council meeting, her daddy the mayor shared the results with city officials and aldermen. Enough to serve 125 babies! Hallelujah!
Just prior to the meeting, Bogusz showed Captain Shannon Martinez, Corps Officer at The Salvation Army, Des Plaines and Breakfast with Baby Director Cheryl Hagedorn all the diapers that had been collected. In addition to boxes and packages of diapers, so many partial packages (loose diapers) were collected that they filled two large boxes. Hagedorn was surprised at the large quantity of size 5s and size 6s. “We so rarely have these for the moms that need them. They will be very grateful.”
The threesome took time for a photo in the mayor’s office. Hagedorn presented the mayor with a “Be a Shield” Salvation Army button and thanked him for his work on behalf of Breakfast with Baby. They then headed to the council chamber where Captain Shannon spoke briefly about the Breakfast with Baby program and fielded questions from aldermen. The most amazing comment was from Alderman Pat Haugeberg who said, “The Salvation Army should have Breakfast with Baby all over the country!” We agree.
Helping Jacqueline were:
- her father, Mayor Matt Bogusz,
- Two Men and a Truck,
- staff and parents at A Mother’s Touch daycare, and
- the Evening Circle of 1st Congregational Church.
- Holly Sorenson at the Des Plaines Public Library,
- Andrea Biwer at the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce, and

We also want to recognize the extraordinary efforts of Nancy Peterson, Executive Secretary, Office of the Mayor. Thanks, Nancy!
